The Hanke property is a landlocked piece bordering the massive Paugnut State Forest. According to Connecticut Names and Places, "Paugnut" is supposed to be the name of the last Indian chief in the area.

The outflow from the swamp shown above cuts through the north part of the tract, eventually  flowing along Saw Mill Hill Road where it powered the mills sited there.

Signs of deer and beaver abound in the area around the brook. After crossing it  there is a large area of Mountain Laurel which in turn gives way to white pines as the land begins to rise.

The property was donated by Art and Jano Hanke. Art was a former trustee of HLPT and did much stewardship work for the group.
